Group functionality has come a long way on LinkedIn since the early days, and one of the aspects that is a must for successful group interactions and livelihood is the attitude of members.
Let’s look at some of the ways it might be one of my favorite linked things…

Here’s a bit of a tribute to LinkedIn for all my readers – I hope you enjoy it!
This thread will also help me start a number of postings over the next few weeks as I cover each of these favorite things – to explain them a little further.
Visiting this site for the first time?
If the video has brought you to The LinkedIn Personal Trainer for the very first time, a bit of an introduction is in order.
Hi – I’m steve!
And I wrote The LinkedIn Personal Trainer as a concise guide to getting started with LinkedIn – and sell it in both paperback and e-book formats.
This site is dedicated to exploring and using LinkedIn as an extension of that book.
Archives
I’ve written nearly 200 additional articles about new features, happenings in the LinkedIn world, and reader questions – and they’re all available to you through the “Archives”, “Categories”, and “Search” sections off in the header or right column.
Reader feedback
I’m always interested in the issues you face and looking for material for articles, so please don’t be a stranger. If you leave a comment, or send me a note, I’ll do my very best to respond quickly.
Like what you read?
And lastly, if you like what you’ve read here, please sign up for the email feed (or RSS if you prefer that) in the top right corner.
When you enter your email address, I’ll give you a short note whenever a new article is posted – so you don’t have to keep checking back.
The email will include the headline and first paragraph of the topic – and if you’re not interested, just delete it and move on. If the topic is of interest, there will be a link to click over for the full article.
And spread the word
Perhaps the biggest thing you can do to help me, is to spread the word about this site. If you learned something here, recommend the LinkedInPersonalTrainer.com to others.
As always, I remain committed to your continued success,
steve

LinkedIn recently offered a significant update to the groups function.
Looking back – I covered the last update in September / October 2008, so it looks like the folks at LinkedIn reviewed that effort and turned it into an eighteen month update cycle.
Let’s have a look.

Happy 2010 to everyone – let’s start the year out with some practical advice.
After the LIPSO post, the last of 2009, a reader asked if I would drop article summaries into their LinkedIn Group. With a bit of investigating, I decided I couldn’t commit to that, but did suggest that the reader just add this site’s RSS feed to the Group’s News site – and then the short opening to an article would appear automatically.
Her response – could I outline how to do that;-)

Promised myself that I’d get an article out on LinkedIn subgroups before we get snow, and in order to keep that promise, I have to get this article out now!
The concept behind subgroups is probably more sexy than the implementation, but you still want to understand what’s going on…

This one comes with a bit of a confession on my part as I didn’t realize this had happened until I was in the middle of an event showing some of the better (and non-spammy) ways to use LinkedIn for marketing.
(But you always have to stay on your toes with LinkedIn – Thursdays seem to be their prime days for making changes, and that means that when you walk into an event on Friday, things might have changed considerably overnight;-)
In any case – I was explaining how to set things so that group “summary-of-activity” messages get delivered daily, weekly, or never at all – and realized that for some reason, the group was currently set not to give me any messages at all.
That’s not what I remembered setting it as, so I thought it would be an interesting investigation and overview…

I was a consumer long before I had an expertise to sell, and it rankles me when overt “selling” tries to sneak under the radar as “friendliness”.
The subject of the message I received the other day was (of course) friendly enough: “You may enjoy these articles”
Well – certainly – I’d like to hear about things that I might enjoy, but how do they know? …

Yesterday’s mailbag included an interesting question from Ray – he’d like to know how to get the logos of his favoite organizations displayed on his profile and was unhappy that he hadn’t been able to figure it out.
I explained that it was a bit like trying to find a strategy for capturing a unicorn – just because you want to do something like that doesn’t mean you can.
But I worked out a good alternative that I’ll share with you.

I’m really excited about creating this program – The Project Solvers and I have developed a workshop on Thursday July 16th for project teams and managers.
Besides the usual questions about how to use LinkedIn, we’ll show participants a tools set that will allow you to run projects effectively through LinkedIn and a few of the additional applications tied into the service.
How can project members communicate across the team?
Is there a way to share project plans and documents?
Can we get feedback from the development community, or the marketplace?
If our project team is scattered across several companies, cities, and continents, how can we setup an environment that lets us all do what we have to do?
All those questions – and more – will be answering for the workshop participants!

I’ve been telling trainees about the use of LinkedIn to reach out to alumni for a while now, and decided to “field test” my advice;-)
Would the alumni from your Alma Mater really be open to your contact?
Absolutely – read on…
