I’d Like To Announce… With LinkedIn

Posted by Steve Tylock on 03 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

Received a note from Mary in the mailbag to spark today’s post.  She purchased the e-book and enjoyed it – finding it useful, but writes “How do you bring people up to date on your company’s happenings?”

Well, she’s right – the book doesn’t cover this topic very well because this really isn’t something that LinkedIn was designed for.  LinkedIn is aimed at connecting you to specific individuals (and vice versa).

So let’s go through some options together.

Sorting LinkedIn Searches By Relationship

Posted by Steve Tylock on 26 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: Profiles, Ways to Use LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s “Introduction” feature is key to the service – it lets users reach out to potential customers, employers, employees, partners, and even investors.

This is a great way to turn a cold call into a warm introduction – through a mutually trusted individual.

And while it is possible to ask for introductions to both 2nd and 3rd level connections, it is easier with 2nd – because there is only one individual in the middle that knows both the introducer and the introducee.

LinkedIn opened up a search option to allow users to specify the relationship – and you should do that.

Let me take you through it…

NY Times Gets It Wrong – Good Nets Work On Merit

Posted by Steve Tylock on 18 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: About the Service, Connections, Jobs, Ways to Use LinkedIn

Yesterday’s article in the NY Times misses the boat, and I’ve got to call them on it.  The shocking suggestion is that networking sites will lead to nepotism.  (And by networking sites, they mean ones just like LinkedIn – and since the article only mentions LinkedIn, there’s not much doubt about it…)

Have Any Super-Sekrit Information On Your LinkedIn Profile?

Posted by Steve Tylock on 12 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: Profiles, Ways to Use LinkedIn

This wouldn’t be funny if it were the first time it’s happened, but it isn’t – so it is funny!

Redorbit.com has pointed out some information about Microsoft’s plans for Windows 8 & 9 – plans gleaned from the profile of a Microsoft employee on LinkedIn.

Here’s some handy advice so that you can avoid the unlucky position this gentleman is in.

Be Careful With LinkedIn’s Profile Organizer Trial

Posted by Steve Tylock on 02 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

I’ve written before about LinkedIn’s Good, Better, Best account philosophy- the recent  introduction of the Profile Organizer feature is causing quite a buzz – good for them;-)

And I hate to be a buzz-kill, but think about your intentions before you start down that road…

LinkedIn for the Business Professional: After the Introduction

Posted by Steve Tylock on 30 Aug 2009 | Tagged as: Teleseminars, Ways to Use LinkedIn

I’ve hooked up with the Rochester Women’s Network to offer this new session to be held the evening of September 22nd.

They invited me to speak back in March of 2008, so it makes a natural extension of that introductory session.

School’s back and everyone is grudgingly getting out of summer mode and into action.  Are you ready?

And the group is happy to allow men into this program – read on for more…

The Protection of Dealing with Friends of Friends

Have you ever gotten into a bad deal, or been taken advantage of?

Sure – we all have.  It happens some times.

How about this – how often have you driven down that road when a good friend has recommended you meet someone?

Probably not so often, right?

So think for a moment about your connections on LinkedIn…

Leveraging LinkedIn for Effective Projects

Posted by Steve Tylock on 03 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: Connections, Endorsements, Etiquette, Groups, Introductions, Profiles, Teleseminars, Ways to Use LinkedIn

I’m really excited about creating this program – The Project Solvers and I have developed a workshop on Thursday July 16th for project teams and managers.

Besides the usual questions about how to use LinkedIn, we’ll show participants a tools set that will allow you to run projects effectively through LinkedIn and a few of the additional applications tied into the service.

How can project members communicate across the team?

Is there a way to share project plans and documents?

Can we get feedback from the development community, or the marketplace?

If our project team is scattered across several companies, cities, and continents, how can we setup an environment that lets us all do what we have to do?

All those questions – and more – will be answering for the workshop participants!

Viewers Of This Profile Also Viewed…

Posted by Steve Tylock on 25 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

A recent commenter on my “Someone’s Been Sitting In My Chair” article mentioned that they like to check into the people that viewers of a particular profile have also viewed. (Thanks Wil!-)

My first reaction and reply back was that the information was good only for other people’s profiles, but when I was writing this article, I realized a nifty way to use this feature  to see who else viewers of your profile viewed – you’ll want to see this!

Using LinkedIn Passively

Posted by Steve Tylock on 07 May 2009 | Tagged as: About the Service, Ways to Use LinkedIn

Well – my lack of post last week gives me a good topic for this week – how LinkedIn works even when you’re not thinking about it.

Even without taking the time to login to the LinkedIn system to proactively search out contacts, make introduction requests, and pursue your own agenda, LinkedIn is still there for you.

Other members from the current pool of 38 million are searching, asking for introductions, and looking to make things happen.
