Reporting on my first week of Twitter – quite an eye-opener.
The single biggest difference between twitter and the use of LinkedIn that I’ve seen is the ability to follow other seemingly random people (and often be followed in return).
The nature of the tie is not the same as on LinkedIn – it’s a question of expecting to see interesting tweets from the other, not a sharing of contacts, recommendations or professional reputation.
Here, let me give an example…

I’m going to take the Mark Twain acknowledgment – I did not come up with all of the above title, but if you can think of a better quote, I’d like to hear it;-)
A different catchy title brought me to a recent post that suggested that a huge number of companies – 83% – are using Facebook, and I just didn’t buy it.
I had to check further, and my suspicions were quickly confirmed as telltale traces of distortion caught my notice.
Sure, the sites will get me to point to their articles, but you might enjoy following along as I tackle the subject…

In conjunction with the tweeting style, I’ll try to keep this entry short…

October’s poll results reveal an interesting pattern – that most users are involved in more than one networking site.
But you know me – it’s never that simple – let’s have some fun…

Hot on the heels of my “friend” trying to get me to join a new group and get exposed to their wonderful marketing message, I’ve got not one, but two more instances of flawed contacts around my LinkedIn presence.
First – we’ve got to throw out the enhancement / dating / watching sort of spam – I’m not talking about that at all. Nobody wants it and it’s very automated. (actually – somebody, somewhere must want it or they’d stop doing it…)
I’m talking about situations that don’t work out well when someone has a “real” product and they want more people (you and I;-) to know about it – and they don’t take care with their message.
That’s when things go off course…

At the beginning of September I added polling to The LinkedIn Personal Trainer blog site – and created a post begging for responses with an innovative poll that attempted to offer an answer (to a yes or no question) that nearly everyone could respond to.
The results are shocking! Shocking I tell you!

The appeal was simple: “Steve, The Syracuse Alumni Club of Rochester is holding a book fair to raise funds for children’s literacy. As a local author, would you be willing to sign books for an hour to help support this?”
My response was just as simple: “Count me in!”
Their event was set for September 26th and 27th – and it looks like that weekend is coming up, so I’ve got plans to be out there on Sunday.

Slightly off-topic entry today, and a slice of the author’s life outside of LinkedIn – but a good education and lesson at the end if you’ll humor me…

So the web is a-flutter with reports that the Wall Street Journal is looking to grab LinkedIn’s market.
That’s an interesting proposition.
But really – what are their prospects of doing so?
